What? You Didn’t You Get Your Property Tax Valuation Notice? Who’s Fault is That?

Tax Protest Deadline is June 1stIf you didn’t get your property tax valuation notice, it could be your own fault. At least that appears to be the position of the Fort Bend CAD.

Why?
If you had an outside company, such as O’Conner and Associates, represent you LAST YEAR to protest your taxes, the CAD sent them THIS YEARS’ VALUATION FORM.

Why?
Because the CAD considers your representative from last year to be your representative this year. They only send one notice: either to you or your representative.

Why?
Because, until you tell the CAD that you don’t have a representative, they assume that you want your prior representative to represent you this year and every year until you tell them otherwise.

Seem Crazy? Yup – we agree. You at least deserve a “carbon copy of the notice, don’t you?

According to Scott Sherrill, Marketing Director with O’Conner and Associates, when you sign up with them (or any other proteste firm) you sign an ongoing agreement which extends automatically. So, while you can apparantly cancel the agreement at any time, until you let the CAD know of the change, they will continue to send your notices to your representative of record. By the way, this is not unique to Fort Bend CAD. Most CAD’s work this way.

According to Mr. Sherrill, the CAD has no plans (and has not been asked) to change the policy. It is apparantly accepted as the way it works.

So, if you didn’t get your notice, now you know why.

The good news, at least for O’Conner & Associates customers, is that when they receive the notice of valuation, they automatically file the apropriate protest forms. CALL your tax protest representative to make sure.

O’Conner’s number is 713-290-9700 or toll free 1-877-4-TAXCUT to verify if you’re included in their protest queue.

You have until June 1 to file a protest. Visit the Fort Bend CAD Website.
